Police say a 19-year-old drunk driver intentionally hit a pedestrian, a bicyclist, and another car Saturday in Monrovia.
• A 19-year-old drunk driver hit a pedestrian and fled the scene.
• Then the drunk driver drove “doughnuts” around and elderly bicylist, struck the cyclist with the car, and again fled the scene.
• Witnesses followed the drunk driver onto the freeway. The drunk driver rammed their car, crashed into the center divider, and fled the scene on foot.
• Police arrested him shortly thereafter.
The series of hit-and-run accidents ensued shortly before 6 a.m., according to a report in the Pasadena Star-News.
California Highway Patrol Sgt. Chris Hamilton said 19-year-old Anthony Pina of Glendora was driving a 1997 Buick Regal when he struck a 46-year-old El Monte man at the intersection of Mountain and Schrode avenues.
The Star-News identified the victim as a cyclist, but CBS News said he was a pedestrian. He suffered cuts to his face and head, CHP Officer Rodrigo Jimenez told CBS. Pina fled the scene.
A few minutes later, Pina came across a 63-year-old Duarte man on a bicycle at Huntington Drive and Mountain Avenue. Police said Pina started driving in circles around the cyclist — doing “doughnuts” — and then intentionally struck him and fled the scene. The injured cyclist was hospitalized in critical condition, Jimenez said.
Two witnesses in a Mini Cooper then followed Pina and provided information to police as Pina headed east on the 210 Freeway. Pina rammed the Mini Cooper with his Buick near Vernon Avenue and then crashed into the center divider on the freeway.
The Buick flipped over, but Pina escaped from the vehicle and fled on foot. Azusa police caught hima dn arrested him shortly thereafter.
Pina was charged with four counts of assault with a deadly weapon, two counts of drunken driving causing injury, and two counts of hit-and-run causing injury, Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office spokeswoman Jane Robison told the Star-News.
